Why A Blog for Catholic, Christian, Conservative Y.A.s

The simple answer is that there is a need for fiction for young adults who are Catholic, Christian, and conservative. I am unapologetically square.

I am not going to wrestle with the many complex issues of our current time. By that I mean politics, controversial societal issues, and cultural positions. There is enough venom spurted and blood spilt all over the Internet without the need to spurt and spill more.

My model  as a writer is Jane Austen, who has managed to weather the victorian era, the fin de siecle, WWI, the flapper era, the Depression, WWII, the square 1950s, the groovy 1960s, the Sexual Revolution, the get-down, get-down 1970s, the Yuppie 80s, and, now, COVID19, and yet remain popular

In my first published one book, The Orange Dragon Bowl, I answer the question. . .

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN EVERYTHING IN YOUR LIFE STARTS TO GO TO HELL?

Fifteen-year-old Julie Tyler is about to find out. A minor incident with a schoolmate unleashes a year of vicious gossip, malicious pranks, and academic sabotage that puts her scholastic standing at risk. Just before Christmas, her mother is diagnosed with a very serious form of breast cancer that nearly kills her. Then Julie’s life takes another hit. Her father, a highly regarded assistant D.A., is accused of attempted rape while in college. It’s complete hokum, but the local news outlets have a field day with it. Life is good in rare spurts and the friendship of Gloria Jackson, an older girl at school, is a huge help. Julie also always has her warped humor to fall back on. Is Richard Egan, whom she meets at the end of the book, her reward for her awful year?

So, no, my characters are obviously not preoccupied with riding costumes or invites to the next ball. They have to contend--do battle with--all the dragons of our current times. Drugs, gangs, cancer, character assasination, academic sabotage, racism, parents in prison, economic disparities, racism, poverty, the Vietnam war, urban blight. . . It's a veritable smorgasbord of troubles.

Oh, yes, I serve up these raw realities with a lot of humor--LOL humor!
